Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Satluj’ set for re-release on OTT! Petition filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court

Efforts to bring Diljit Dosanjh’s film ‘Satluj’ back to the OTT platform ZEE5 have intensified. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding this matter. According to lawyer Hakam Singh, the petition argues that the removal of the film constitutes a violation of the freedom of speech and expression.

Efforts to restore Diljit Dosanjh’s film ‘Satluj’ on the OTT platform ZEE5 have intensified. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding this matter. ‘Satluj’ was released on ZEE5 on July 3 but was removed from the platform within 48 hours. Subsequently, the platform issued an apology and stated that ‘Satluj’ would not be available for viewing in India until further notice.

The filed petition argues that the removal of the content violates the constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression. It questions the absence of any publicly disclosed legal grounds for this decision and demands greater transparency from the authorities. ‘Satluj’ is based on the life of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Since the film’s removal, members of the film industry and Sikh organisations have criticised the move.

Who filed the petition for the re-release of the Sutlej?

Speaking about the petition, lawyer Hakam Singh told IANS that the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Shravan Singh, a Punjab resident and ZEE5 subscriber. He said, “The film ‘Satluj’, released on the ZEE5 platform on July 3, was removed on July 5. The petitioner has filed a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, stating that this constitutes a violation of Article 19, which guarantees the freedom of speech and expression. The petitioner has demanded that the film be restored to the platform and allowed to be streamed again.”

Petitioner raised these questions; the Central Government formed a 3-member committee

Hakam Singh stated that the petitioner has challenged the grounds on which the film was withdrawn without any prior notice or a transparent conclusion. He noted that although the Centre has constituted a three-member committee to examine the matter, the reasons for halting the film have not been made public. Hakam Singh said, “The Central Government has formed a three-member committee in this case, but the reasons for stopping the film have not been disclosed. We expect the petition to be heard tomorrow or on the next working day.”

Why was ‘Satluj’ stuck with the Censor Board? Why was it removed from OTT?

It is worth noting that the film ‘Satluj’, directed by Honey Trehan, had been stuck with the Censor Board for the past 3–4 years. Originally titled ‘Punjab 95’, the film had faced a demand for 127 cuts from the Censor Board. The makers quietly released the film on an OTT platform under the title ‘Satluj’ on July 3. Although many people watched and highly praised the film, it was removed from the platform just two days later. Upon taking cognisance of the release, the Central Government ordered its removal, citing security concerns and expressing apprehension that certain scenes in ‘Satluj’ could be exploited for anti-national activities.

‘Satluj’: Story and Cast

‘Satluj’ is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. He investigated the cases involving the cremation of thousands of unclaimed bodies and the disappearance of 25,000 young Sikhs between 1984 and 1994, uncovering several shocking truths in the process. Ultimately, however, he was abducted and killed by the Punjab Police. Apart from Diljit Dosanjh, the film features Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, Kanwaljit Singh, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
