Many villains have come and gone in the history of pop culture, but the impact of the Joker—with his white face, green hair, and terrifying grin—has been truly unique. The idea for the Joker came from this film

The Joker made his debut in Batman #1, published in 1940. He was co-created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. Remarkably, the inspiration for the Joker came from a 1928 silent film titled The Man Who Laughs. In this film, Conrad Veidt played the character ‘Gwynplaine,’ whose face bore a permanent, terrifying grin resulting from a childhood tragedy.

The blueprint for this major Batman adversary was created by combining that face with the Joker from a deck of playing cards. In his very first appearance, the Joker was no mere buffoon; rather, he was a highly cunning, cold, and ruthless serial killer. He used ‘Joker Venom’ to kill his victims, leaving a grotesque, frozen grin on their faces.

Everyone knows Batman’s past, but there has never been an official answer as to who the Joker was. A glimpse of his background was first revealed in DC’s Detective Comics #168 in 1951. According to the story, he was originally a masked criminal known as the ‘Red Hood’; while trying to escape from Batman, he fell into a tank filled with chemicals.

The effects of chemicals turned his skin white, his hair green, and his lips red, and he lost his sanity, transforming into the Joker. Then, in 1988, Alan Moore’s graphic novel The Killing Joke gave a new dimension to his psychology. It portrayed him as a failed stand-up comedian who, out of desperation to support his pregnant wife, turns to a life of crime.

Movies turned the Joker into a hero

In the realm of cinema, Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) proved to be a major turning point. Jack Nicholson brought the Joker to life on screen as the gangster ‘Jack Napier’. This film demonstrated for the first time that a villain could command as much attention and stardom as the lead hero.

Then, in 2008, Heath Ledger redefined the character of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. His Joker did not fight for money or power; he believed that “some men just want to watch the world burn.” He challenged Batman’s “no-kill” rule and sought to prove that society’s law and order were merely a facade. This single role turned Heath Ledger into a legend and earned him an Oscar.

In 2019, Joker—directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix—expanded the scope of comic book movies. The film portrayed the Joker not merely as Batman’s antagonist, but as ‘Arthur Fleck,’ a mentally troubled individual marginalised by society.

The story illustrates how societal apathy and systemic failure shatter an ordinary person, turning him into a symbol of violent rebellion. Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for this role.

The Joker’s journey, which began on the pages of a comic book in 1940, has since expanded to encompass comics, television, and cinema. He has evolved beyond being merely a supervillain into a character embodying fear, rage, chaos, and contradiction—one whose various facets have emerged across different eras.
