Why Was Govinda’s Career Ruined? Ashwin Kaushal Lists the Reasons

Ashwin Kaushal stated on a podcast with Siddharth Kannan that Govinda Bhai experienced a downfall. There is only one reason for it: there is no greater poison in life than delusion. It was this very delusion that led to his downfall.”

During the 1990s, Govinda experienced the heady taste of superstardom. During that era, he starred in a string of films, each more impressive than the last. His on-screen pairing with Kader Khan was a massive hit. Furthermore, when paired with actresses like Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor, Govinda didn’t just light up the screen—he took the box office by storm. He delivered hit after hit; however, just as quickly as the actor had ascended the ladder of success, he faced an equally rapid downfall in his career. The situation today is such that he is now performing stage shows or dancing at school and college parties.

Several filmmakers and actors within the industry have weighed in on the reasons behind Govinda’s downfall and career decline, frequently citing his habit of arriving late to sets. Many have attributed his decline to his lack of punctuality. Now, years later, actor Ashwin Kaushal has spoken out about Govinda’s ruined career; he enumerated the reasons, stating that Govinda had fallen prey to delusions.

Ashwin Kaushal Calls Govinda ‘Superstitious’

In fact, during a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Ashwin Kaushal remarked, “Did Govinda bhai experience a downfall? There is only one reason for it: there is no greater poison in life than superstition. This very superstition led to his downfall; it altered his demeanour, his attitude—everything.” Furthermore, Ashwin offered a prayer for Govinda, asking, “Who could stop him?”

‘That Man Is the God of Entertainment’

Ashwin Kaushal says, “There is still time—it’s not as if he has become that old. Is he 90? I still pray that someone helps ‘Chichi Bhaiya’ break free from this delusion and offers him a truly good role.” He goes on to praise Govinda’s work, stating, “That man is the God of Entertainment; in him, you can see the spirit of Kader Khan Saab. Kader Khan Saab departed after bestowing his blessings upon him. He will keep that medium—and all the actors of the 90s era—alive; however, there is nothing more formidable than self-delusion.” Ashwin Kaushal believes that all of this remains acceptable only up to a certain point.

List the Reasons Behind Govinda’s Downfall

During the conversation, Ashwin Kaushal also outlined the reasons behind Govinda’s downfall. He stated, “From what I have heard—to sum it up in a nutshell—the bottom line is that, over time, Chichi became excessively superstitious, and this went against his very personality. He began to harbour an excessive number of irrational beliefs.”

Govinda Had Become a Blind Devotee: Ashwin Kaushal

Describing Govinda as a “blind devotee,” he remarks, “Let me tell you, there is a certain kind of spirituality within him. He is deeply immersed in devotion. Through that devotion, he was perhaps able to foresee the future or sense negative occurrences—warnings he would then share in an effort to protect his friends. It is possible that people did not interpret these warnings in the right spirit. Then again, what exactly is ever taken in the right spirit here in this industry?” Ashwin further claims regarding Govinda that, over time, he began to predict events. The actor believes that these predictions often concerned misfortunes that would befall fellow actors and directors—and they would, indeed, come true.

“100 Percent of People Are Jealous of Him” – Ashwin Kaushal

Furthermore, regarding Govinda, Ashwin Kaushal asserts that people in the industry are envious of one another’s success. He states, “I feel that out of every 100 people, there is only one who genuinely wishes for someone else’s well-being. If ‘ChiChi Bhaiya’ wanted to today, he could reclaim his title as a superstar. However, 100 percent of people are likely to be jealous of him. Back in those days, even other superstars were jealous of him. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that 110 percent of people are envious of him.”

Govinda’s Comeback Was a Flop

It is worth noting that Govinda decided to make a comeback after a long hiatus, but his return did not prove successful. After a considerable period, Govinda attempted to stage a comeback with the film Rangeela Raja, but things did not work out as planned. Nevertheless, when discussing the hit films of his career, he has delivered a string of hits—each surpassing the last—and truly memorable movies, be it in the genres of action, romance, or comedy.

This includes hundreds of films such as Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Partner (2007), Dulhe Raja (1998), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)—films through which Govinda reigned supreme on the silver screen throughout the 1990s.
