In fact, during the mid-1990s, Marvel was going through the most difficult period in its history. Following a slump in comic book sales and business troubles, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1996. Its shares had been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange, and its television and licensing businesses had also weakened. In 1998, the company merged with Toy Biz, which helped Marvel survive.

According to Taj, the project ultimately did not materialize—he does not know the reason why—but they were making significant progress in that direction. He also noted that, beyond just Spider-Man, Michael Jackson was a huge Marvel fan who was knowledgeable about all the characters and likely even wanted to play Spider-Man himself.

He mentioned it in a few interviews following Michael Jackson’s death, though he noted that he wasn’t sure whether Jackson wanted to produce a film or play a character in one. Jackson had approached him because Stan Lee was the creator of the characters and Jackson believed he could help secure the rights; however, Lee informed him that Marvel held all the rights.
Michael also attempted to purchase the rights to Spider-Man separately from Marvel. Ultimately, the deal did not materialize, and Marvel took a different path. The company’s cinematic comeback began with Blade in 1998 and X-Men in 2000. This was followed in 2002 by Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. At the time, Michael was in his forties, whereas Maguire was 26 and portraying a much younger version of the character.
Michael Jackson had long shown an interest in filmmaking. Moonwalker, Captain EO, and his lavish music videos created with filmmakers like John Landis, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola were examples of this interest. His desire to venture into superhero movies was an extension of that same interest, but this dream never became a reality.
