Ana de Armas Caso was born on April 30, 1988, in Havana, Cuba, and was raised in the small town of Santa Cruz del Norte. Her grandfather was a Cuban immigrant from Spain. Her father, Ramón, worked various jobs as a bank manager, teacher, school principal, and deputy mayor of a town. She had previously studied philosophy at a Soviet university. Her mother Anna worked in the Human Resources Department of the Ministry of Education. De Armas’ older brother, Javier, is a New York-based photographer who was questioned by Cuban police in 2020 over his critical stance on Decree 349 and his relationship with artists under government supervision. As a teenager, Ana De Armas had no Internet access outside Cuba and limited knowledge of popular culture. She was allowed to watch “Saturday 20-minute cartoons and Sunday movie matinees”. Her family did not have a “video or DVD player” and she watched Hollywood movies in her neighbor’s apartment. She memorized and rehearsed the monologue in front of a mirror, and when she was 12, she decided to become an actress. In 2002, at the age of 14, she successfully auditioned for the Cuban National Theater in Havana. She was sometimes a hitchhiked to get involved in the “rigorous” course.
As a student, she made three films. She dropped out of the four-year drama course a month before submitting her final thesis because Cuban graduates are not allowed to leave the country without completing three years of compulsory service to the community. Director Andrew Dominik watched D’Armas’ performance in Knock Knock and, after going through a lengthy casting process, Dominik secured the role after her first audition. In preparation, Ana De Armas worked with a language coach for one year.
